Germany - Aachen to launch DTT services
January 27, 2006 (DigiTAG) – Plans have been announced for the launch of DTT services in the city of Aachen, a German city located near the border with Belgium and the Netherlands.

Spain - Uni2 to launch IPTV by end of quarter
January 27, 2006 (TeleGeography) – France Télécom’s Spanish telco Uni2 is planning to launch IPTV services under the Wanadoo Spain banner before the end of the first quarter, becoming the latest in a growing line of operators looking to break into the broadband TV market.

Amaru Inc. Companies Launch Global IPTV Service In USA & Asian Markets With Japanese Technology Partner Zentek
January 27, 2006 – Amaru Inc (AMRU) through its Singapore-based subsidiary M2B World Pte. Ltd., and its Hollywood-based company, M2B World Inc., together with its technology partner Zentek Technology Singapore (Zentek), announced the launching of a Global IPTV service that will offer consumers 40 channels of video on-demand (VOD) content delivered to their television screens via a broadband connection. Reflecting the brands continuing promise to offer the latest in entertainment delivery solutions, it has also announced that it expects to roll-out the first of 10,000 units of its set-top boxes in June of 2006 as well, jointly aimed at US and Singaporean consumers.
All content for this Global IPTV service are exclusively provided by M2B World. While on the technology side, it is partnering Zentek Technology Singapore (Zentek) for the design of the set-top boxes and for technical service support to customers on a worldwide basis.
Amaru Inc and its M2B World subsidiaries target to ship 250,000 set-top boxes worldwide within this year. The set-top box is pre-bundled with a monthly subscription for the 40 channels of content. Consumers will be able to order online and from local retail channels. Further details of the subscription plan and content line-up will be released by the end of February together with preview screenings to the media.

RadioScape Leads Development of Chinese Market for Digital Audio and Multimedia Broadcasting
January 27, 2006 - RadioScape, a world leader in digital audio and multimedia broadcast technology, is leading the adoption of Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB) and Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) in China through the supply of the very latest Professional DMB/DAB Broadcast Systems to a number of major broadcasters. Systems have already been installed at Beijing Jolon Digital Media Broadcasting, Shanghai Oriental Pearl (Group), and Guangdong Yue Guang Digital Multimedia Broadcasting. Further contracts are expected soon from other leading broadcasters. DMB services for both audio and mobile TV will be on air by the second quarter of this year.
RadioScape has been involved in numerous trials of T-DMB and sending multimedia over Enhanced Packet Mode in both Asia and Europe. Its Professional Broadcast Systems and Research and Test Systems were used in the development of the DMB standard and compatible receiver handsets. T-DMB can provide H.264 QCIF (355 x 288 pixels) at a frame rate of 25 to 30 fps using 384 to 768 Kbps. The DMB broadcasts are anticipated to cover news, music videos, sports, education, movies and simultaneous transmission of terrestrial TV programmes. DAB radio will also be broadcast bringing the benefits of digital clarity and a wide range of content.

TANDBERG Television wins US MPEG-4 IPTV order for $10m
January 27, 2006 - TANDBERG Television (TAT.OL) today announced that it has received an order from a leading digital television service provider in the United States, valued at US$10m. The contract will see TANDBERG Television deliver MPEG-4 AVC SD compression systems during the first half of 2006, in support of that customer's deployment of IPTV super-headend platforms.

Penthera Secures Series A Funding; Accelerates Commercialization of Mobile Digital TV
January 26, 2006 - Penthera Technologies, Inc., a software provider for mobile broadcast multimedia, including video and audio services, today announced the close of $6.6 million in Series A preferred funding, which was led by Warburg Pincus and included Modeo™ LLC, a subsidiary of Crown Castle International Corporation, and ITU Ventures.
Penthera™ provides an end-to-end software solution, Athena™, which delivers live television and radio to mobile devices such as handsets, PDAs and laptops. Modeo is expected to integrate Penthera’s technology with its broadcast mobile video service, which is planned to launch commercially in select U.S. markets later this year.

Telenet Digital TV achieves major milestone

January 26, 2006 (Light Reading) - France Telecom SA is to take advantage of its telco TV experience in its domestic market by launching IPTV services in neighboring European markets in 2006, according to Benjamin Schwarz, the executive leading the services push.

DMB, Wibro Launching into Canada
January 26, 2006 (ETNEWS) - The Ministry of Information and Communication said on January 25 that Silicon Valley Overseas IT Support Center (iPARK) at the Korea IT Industry Promotion Agency exchanged a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for cooperation in DMB and Wibro with the Telecommunication Laboratories, the largest information and telecommunication laboratory in Canada.

Broadcom Reports Fourth Quarter and Year 2005 Results
January 26, 2006 - Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM) today reported unaudited financial results for its fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2005.
Net revenue for the fourth quarter of 2005 was $820.6 million, an increase of 18.1% from the $695.0 million reported for the third quarter of 2005 and an increase of 52.1% from the $539.4 million reported for the fourth quarter of 2004. Net income computed in accordance with U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) for the fourth quarter of 2005 was $194.8 million, or $.50 per share (diluted), compared with GAAP net income of $132.7 million, or $.35 per share (diluted), for the third quarter of 2005, and GAAP net income of $71.1 million, or $.20 per share (diluted), for the fourth quarter of 2004.

tvtv to collaborate with YooMedia for EPG and interactive digital television services
January 26, 2006 - YooMedia, the AIM-traded interactive content and services provider, has signed an agreement with tvtv, a branch of Sony United Kingdom Ltd, to provide bandwidth for transmission of rich EPG data through Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) in the UK.
tvtv is aggregating and transmitting TV metadata through Internet, analog and digital broadcast in Europe. The service enables advanced EPG functionality on TV sets, digital set-top-boxes, personal video recorders, DVD recorders, personal computers and mobile phones. Device manufacturers, using the tvtv EPG data service, can design their own user interface and offer consumers easy to use, state of the art devices with inter-connectivity within mobile, internet and broadcast platforms.
In addition, YooMedia and tvtv will collaborate to research and develop additional interactive digital television services via or in conjunction with the EPG, such as enhanced on-screen TV magazines and interactive television advertising.

Trident Microsystems Reports Financial Results for Second Quarter of Fiscal Year 2006
January 25, 2006 - Trident Microsystems, Inc. LSI Logic Reports Q4 Revenue Increase of 21% Year-Over-Year

Envivio Becomes Leading Provider of MPEG-4 Video Headends for New Wave of IPTV Services in China
January 25, 2006 - In 2005, Envivio Inc. sold more than 300 channels of encoding systems for IPTV installations in China and is now the leading provider of broadcast quality MPEG-4 video headends in the country. At present, four independent China-based IPTV trials and services are using the 4Caster™ Broadcast Series encoders to power IP applications for live television.
Last year, Envivio won an unprecedented number of bids from service providers and integrators in the IPTV, mobile, broadcast and enterprise market sectors. With last week's announcement that Motorola has agreed to buy Kreatel, the Swedish manufacturer of IPTV set top boxes - coupled with last year's announcement of Cisco's move to purchase Scientific Atlanta - the 500 pound gorillas have officially arrived. This is a "good news/bad news" proposition for the remaining IPTV STB vendors. The good news: their market is now large enough to warrant the attention of the big boys. The bad news: they demand a huge share of the market!

January 25, 2006 (BBJ) - Parliament's speedy approval of a bill on digital television broadcasting could give Hungary an advantage when frequency bands are allocated in May and June; still, the bill is being contested by those who wish to see the medium's broadcast content overseen by state authorities, rather than liberalized, Minister of IT and Communications Kálmán Kovacs said yesterday, after a meeting of Hungary's parliamentary parties to discuss the bill.

Second Meeting of ATSC Essential Patent Holders to be Held February 8; MPEG LA Call for Essential Patents Continues
January 24, 2006 - MPEG LA today announced that the next meeting of ATSC essential patent holders will be held February 8 in New York City. The meeting is part of a continuing effort to address the market's demonstrated need for a single license consisting of essential patents for the digital terrestrial television standard known as ATSC. ATSC, which has been adopted for the transmission and reception of digital television broadcast signals in the United States, incorporates the RF modulation format known as 8-VSB in addition to other technologies.
MPEG LA continues to welcome the submission of patents for an evaluation of their essentiality to the ATSC standard in order to include in one license as much essential intellectual property as possible for the convenience of the marketplace. Any party that believes it has patents that are essential to the standard and wishes to join the ATSC Patent Portfolio License is invited to submit its patents for evaluation by MPEG LA's patent experts. Digital TV To Outpace Broadband Internet in Europe by 2010
January 24, 2006 - The market for 'digital home' services (TV, broadband internet and telephony) in Europe is set to take off in 2006, according to a study by Booz Allen Hamilton titled, "The Future Role of Cable in Shaping the Digital Home in Europe". By 2010, digital TV (DTV) will be available in 60% of European households enabling consumers to access new services, including interactive television. Thus, DTV will replace broadband internet as the principal driver of growth of Europe's digital economy.

Mobile TV Germany - Network Performance, Content, Devices Receive Failing Grades
January 24, 2006 - Strategy Analytics, the global research and consulting company, today released, "Mobile TV Germany: Failing Grades on Content and Network Performances," which concludes that current generation Mobile TV services in Germany are failing to impress users due to poor network performance, lack of compelling content and inadequate devices.
While T-Mobile's Handy TV out-scored Vodafone Live! Mobile TV, users were unimpressed with the experience delivered by both services. Handy TV was rated 5 points higher than Vodafone Live! Overall, and was marginally preferred in all categories including audiovisual quality and usability.

STMicroelectronics Reports 2005 Fourth Quarter and Full Year Revenues and Earnings
January 24, 2006 - STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) reported financial results for the fourth quarter and fiscal year ended December 31, 2005.
• In digital consumer, ST launched the STB7109, the company's second-generation H.264 high-definition TV (HDTV) AVC and VC-1 decoder. Building on the success of the STB7100, the world's first single-chip AVC and MPEG-2 decoder, the STB7109 adds VC-1 decoding, improved security, connectivity features, and support for emerging DVD formats and security standards.
• Adding to the multiple design wins already achieved by both the STB7100 and STB7109, Loewe GmbH adopted the STB7100 for use across its high-end integrated DTV product range and Sagem and ST announced the availability of the world's first MPEG-4 set-top boxes (STBs) based on a single-chip decoder, enabling broadcasters and service operators worldwide to offer end users HDTV and/or many more TV channels, by using their existing broadcast network. The new STB7100-based boxes are being rolled out for satellite, IPTV, and terrestrial broadcast by several operators including Canal+, France-Telecom and Telecom Italia. Additionally, the STB7100, together with ST's STB0899 front-end satellite demodulator, is being used in a Philips STB for Premiere.
• ST announced that it had developed an affordable, ready-to-implement HDTV platform for the Japanese market with BHA Corporation. The two companies plan to use this platform to catalyze the adoption of digital TV in Japan. In China, ST's affiliate company Shanghai-BMC released a complete middleware solution for STBs intended for the Chinese market, as well as for international operators. And for the first time in Brazil, the transmission of a digital terrestrial TV (DTT) signal in HDTV format was publicly demonstrated from a transmitter to an end-user terminal, by ST working in conjunction with leading Brazilian laboratories and universities.

DiBcom announces first significant DVB-H chip order
January 23, 2006 - DiBcom announced today that it has received a major order of DIB7000-H from a leading cell phone manufacturer for delivery in volume beginning in Q2’06 for the European market. The DIB7000-H, the world’s first DVB-H chipset for receiving digital terrestrial TV in accordance with the DVB-H standard, was introduced one year ago.
