Digital TV consultancy launched

May 5th, 2005

WINDSOR, United Kingdom — A new consultancy specialising in digital TV markets and technologies is launched today. Called simply The Digital TV Consultancy, the organisation is set up to provide strategic support to clients managing projects and businesses in the digital consumer electronics field.

There are many paradigm-shifting trends in the digital TV market that need to be managed. The introduction of digital video recorder (DVR) technology; the move to high-definition TV (HDTV); the availability of new lower bitrate video compression algorithms such as MPEG-4 AVC and VC-1; the increasing penetration of broadband and the coming of IPTV; the introduction of new software such as DVB-MHP; and, the many issues of conditional access (CA) and digital rights management (DRM) are all set to have a huge impact. The Digital TV Consultancy is able to help clients to navigate through this rapidly changing landscape.

“Often players are positioned in one part of the value chain, and don’t have the time or the resource to track the other parts of the chain, even though these can have a significant impact on their business. This is where The Digital TV Consultancy can play a part,” said Chris Carter, Managing Director of The Consultancy. “Whether it’s a box manufacturer in China keen to understand the trends in the European market, a pay TV service provider needing to know about the next generation of technology which will impact the type of services they will be able to offer in the future, or a silicon or software intellectual property (IP) vendor looking at taking a full system approach, we’re here to help.”

Chris Carter founded The Digital TV Consultancy after more than ten years experience in the digital TV market – in set-top box, DVD and the underlying processing technologies. Over the years he has been based in the UK, France and Singapore defining new products and business models and developing business from start up levels to hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue. He has had global marketing and business unit responsibility for silicon, software, hardware and security products, whilst managing transnational teams in Europe and China. Most recently he was a Business Unit Director in the Retail Multimedia Division of STMicroelectronics – the worldwide leader in MPEG-2 decoder silicon.

Chris will be attending the Mediacast and ANGA Cable shows later this month. To arrange a meeting to discuss how The Digital TV Consultancy can help you, send an email to enquiries@dtvconsultancy.com or call +44 (0) 208 432 6143.
